Queensland’s Draft State Planning Policy 2026 introduces six new strategic aspirations intended to guide how the State’s interests are interpreted and applied, including the strategic aspiration to “build more housing”.

For housing, that strategic aspiration is reflected in a reframed Housing State Interest, directed at the timely supply of sufficient, well-serviced housing.

The strategic aspirations also provide a framework for considering how housing interacts with other State interests. The Draft SPP makes more explicit the connections between housing, infrastructure, environment, heritage and efficient growth, natural hazards, tourism, and mining and extractive resources.

Our latest RedeMont Insight examines how these new strategic aspirations influence planning for housing and infrastructure, and what the Draft SPP will mean for plan making and development assessment, including infrastructure availability and sequencing, housing in and around centres and complete communities.
