Changes are on the way for koala habitat development regulation in South East Queensland.
The Queensland Government is proposing targeted amendments to the Planning Regulation 2017 that will improve certainty as to when development is exempted from koala habitat assessment or prohibition.

At the same time, a new South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2026–2036 is being drafted to replace the now‑expired strategy. A discussion paper is out, and consultation is open until 15 March 2026.

As part of this review, the Government is seeking feedback on how development in SEQ koala habitat areas should be regulated. Our Insight breaks down the key amendments proposed to exemptions — including changes that depart from the proposals first floated in 2024.
